Marvel Rivals: Hero-Shooter Features & Competitive Edge
Marvel Rivals enters a hero-shooter market crowded with established titles such as Overwatch 2, The Finals, and the short-lived Concord. NetEase Games, the developer behind this 6v6 PvP shooter, is betting that the Marvel IP — spanning 85 years of comics, films, and alternate universes — will give it a decisive edge. Lead game designer Guangyun Chen, speaking at Tokyo Game Show, outlined the team’s strategy: distinct map design, character abilities that feel authentically Marvel, a data-driven approach to balance, and a clear commitment to competitive multiplayer from day one.
Harnessing the Marvel Universe
NetEase is drawing from Marvel’s vast lore to differentiate its game. Every map features its own destruction model, allowing environments to change dynamically during combat. Character abilities are built around recognizable Marvel traits: Spider-Man can swing through the air, Doctor Strange opens portals, and Venom can channel symbiote powers to Penny Parker. The team-up system goes beyond obvious pairings like Groot and Rocket Raccoon, including unexpected cross-universe combinations. With more characters still to be announced before launch, Chen confirmed that the roster will include both iconic heroes and variants from parallel universes — not just the MCU’s most famous faces.
