Roughly once a day, a character slides into my DMs with something absurd—asking for career advice, calling me “Fam,” or posting a GIF of sparkling roses like a Facebook mom. And I get to respond as Stelle, the deadpan protagonist who lives to annoy her pals with non sequiturs. She’s the kind of girl who says your photos look nice before you’ve even sent them. I’ve never felt more seen by a game protagonist.

Star Rail’s sharpest weapon is its awareness of modern internet culture. In one event, you meet Guinaifen, a streamer ghost-hunting for views. “High risk, high reward, high view count,” she says, recruiting you as her social media manager. Every post you craft gets sensationalist titles like “MIND BLOWN!!!! Check out this cosmic horror that can duplicate itself!” and comments from users named “Chicken_Dinner” and “GuinaiFAN_Truther.” And yes, in this sci‑fi future, cryptocurrency is still a joke. The game balances this goofy satire with serious sci‑fi worldbuilding—sometimes the narrator even throws in a Disco Elysium-style tangent about dumpster diving that hides a lore nugget.
