Resident Evil Movie: First & Third-Person Horror

2026 has already been a landmark year for the Resident Evil franchise. Capcom’s survival-horror series achieved its fastest sales milestone ever with Resident Evil Requiem, which sold 5 million copies in its first five days. The momentum continues in September, when Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger releases his big-screen take on the Raccoon City outbreak.

      Cinematic Immersion Through Perspective

In a recent interview with Polygon, Cregger confirmed that his film will unfold “on the periphery” of the incident depicted in Resident Evil 2. More importantly, he aims to translate the games’ signature immersion into cinema. Cregger explained that he is using camera language drawn directly from gameplay—alternating between first- and third-person perspectives as the story follows protagonist Bryan (Austin Abrams). The director said he wants to “honor the vibe and the pacing you get when you play the games,” adding that the camera will often linger behind Bryan, swiveling to track his attention, before occasionally snapping into his point of view. This technique mirrors Resident Evil Requiem, which was the first entry in the series to offer both first- and third-person perspectives at launch.
